Program Overview

Help Us Bring Safe Drinking Water to Lobitos Before Super El Niño Hits

Every Dollar You Give Will Be Doubled

In late 2026, scientists are forecasting one of the strongest Super El Niño events since the devastating floods of 1997–98.

For most people, that sounds like another weather headline.

For the 1,300 people who call Lobitos, Peru home, it could mean weeks, or even months, without access to safe drinking water.

We're launching this campaign now because once the floods begin, it's already too late.

    Why Lobitos?

Lobitos is a small fishing and surf community on Peru's northern coast. Despite its growing international reputation as a surf destination, there is no municipal drinking water system. Water is delivered by truck. During a Super El Niño event, those trucks can't reach town.

Floodwaters can wash away roads, isolating the community from the outside world. Food, fuel, medical supplies, and most importantly, drinking water, can no longer arrive. Sometimes the only way into town is by boat. Families can be left without clean water for days or even weeks while waiting for access to be restored.

    Our Solution

In partnership with La Onza, Waves For Water, and Hazla por tu Ola, we're building centralized rainwater harvesting and filtration systems as well as helping households capture their own rainwater from rooftops before Super El Niño strikes.

Each participating household will receive a simple rainwater capture and filtration system, allowing families to safely collect and treat their own water during periods of isolation. In addition, strategically located community storage tanks equipped with Waves For Water filtration systems will provide emergency backup water supplies when needed most

Instead of relying on outside aid to arrive, Lobitos will have a local source of clean water when it matters most.

    Contribution Matching

Here's the exciting part. Hazla por tu Ola has committed to matching every dollar raised, up to $3,000 USD through this campaign.

That means your donation immediately has twice the impact, helping us install more collection points, purchase more tanks, and provide more families with access to clean drinking water before disaster strikes.

    Help Protect an Entire Community

This project will feed into broader emergency response efforts run by local leaders and Hazla por tu Ola who will also strengthen the community's ability to respond to Super El Nino with food, electricity and gas security. These initiatives are designed to help protect approximately 420 households and more than 1,300 residents during the critical first days following a disaster.

Your donation today helps ensure that when the roads disappear beneath floodwaters… Clean drinking water doesn't. Donate today. Because when the rains arrive, preparation is everything.

    Where Your Donation Goes

We're raising funds for the infrastructure needed to make this system possible:

    • Filters and buckets for every household
    • Installation of water catchment systems on three strategic locations across the community
    • Community training household catchment systems and water filtration
    • Community emergency water storage tanks
    • Installation materials
    • Local labor, training and skilled installation
    • Ongoing maintenance throughout the Super El Niño season

Every remaining La Onza retreat in 2026 will become part of the solution. Instead of filling luggage with extra clothes, our guests and team will help transport as many filters as possible directly into Lobitos, turning tourism into a humanitarian supply chain.

Looking forward, Waves4Water and Hazla por tu Ola will use Lobitos as a successful model to scale the project to other coastal regions across Peru.
