My work with Waves For Water has allowed me to return to many of the places I visited over the years as a traveling surfer… but this time, with a viable way to give back. Brazil is no exception… I have visited the country many times in the past and share a deep spiritual connection with the culture as a result. I have developed close friendships that in light of this recent tragedy, are truly showing their caliber.
Waves For Water is launching a full-fledged relief effort to help get clean water to the victims of the recent floods. Our efforts on the ground are being coordinated by a highly talented and motivated group of friends. It’s amazing to see them rally their troops in the name of their brothers and sisters in need. This is exactly the model that I always try to put forth with W4W – teaching locals our program and giving them the tools to empower their communities long after I leave.
We will be delivering portable water filters to all of the refugee outposts – giving them access to clean drinking water and helping to mitigate the spread of waterborne diseases… Because we simply cannot live without it, everything starts with clean water! It is the essential first step for these displaced families to begin their rebuilding process…
The group we’re partnering with down there ( Loducca and Movimento Cyan ) has named this project – Agua Pura. Serra Viva = Pure Water. Sierra Alive. Our collective goal with this project is to provide access to clean water for everyone in need.
Lastly, in an effort to shed some further light on the situation down there, I would like to share a message from my good friend Vava Ribeiro, our point person (in Brazil) for this project.
“Hey Jon, Its great that you will come and join us in Rio. They will need as much help as they can get. This is the biggest natural disaster ever in Brazil, and the fact that makes this so specific is that we don’t have enough experience with something with this magnitude. There’s no earthquakes, hurricanes or major tornados in our history, so dealing with the aftermath of such great damage and loss is new territory for those in the affected areas. Any kind of support, strategic action or method is welcome. I think W4W works in a very simple yet effective way to help spread aid to the victims. People here need clean water FAST ! Looking forward for your arrival amigo ! – Vava”
Thank you all and wish us luck!!
