Hurricane Sandy Fundraiser

Fundraiser Overview

Hello Friends and Family,

I am writing you with a plea for help. As I sat in my home the other night while a Nor€™easter bared down on us with wind gusts of 50 miles per hour coupled with frigid hail in the wake of Hurricane Sandy, the worst disaster to hit the Northeast in over a century, I couldn'€™t help but think about all the people still without power and heat. How were they getting by through yet another storm?

Collectively we all know someone who has been affected by this Hurricane and will be feeling its devastation for many months to come. I spent the last few days in NJ helping my good friend sort out his house that had 5 feet of water in it thanks to Sandy. The house where his wife and his sixteen month old baby had once lived needed to be gutted to the beams because nothing was salvageable. All of his belongings were ruined and in his yard. His is one story of many.

In places like the Rockaway’s and Long Beach where the ocean met the bay, the effects were even worse. Individuals, families, children and businesses all displaced, many hungry and cold and in dire need of immediate assistance.

On Tuesday November 6th the surf community met in Brooklyn to see what we could do to help our friends and the people we know whose lives have been completely turned upside down because of this storm. At the meeting we became aware of all the amazing initiatives and efforts that were already taking place and we set a plan in motion to focus our efforts even more efficiently to build some of our own and also collectively support those already on the ground.

Through the help of my friend Jon Rose and his charity Waves for Water, we are confident that we can make a serious impact in the recovery effort and the long term rebuilding of our coastal communities.

I am asking that you please donate whatever you can to Waves for Water so that we can make the biggest impact possible and get these funds directly to those on the ground that need it the most. It’s easy to donate and even the smallest amount helps! Thank you in advance.
