Project Overview

For most of us access to clean drinking water is a basic part of life, however there are still 663 million people in the world who have to survive without it everyday.

On 28 July 2010 the United Nations General Assembly declared safe and clean drinking water and sanitation to be a human right essential to the full enjoyment of life and all other human rights.

We, as soon-to-be social workers, were shocked to learn these facts! That’s why we joined together to create a project geared towards the principles of sustainability and help for self-help.

Every semester there are students at our university, the Evangelische Hochschule Ludwigsburg in South Germany, who leave the classroom for a practical semester at a partner university or organization abroad. Since those students are traveling to the countries for their studies anyway, our goal is to equip them with water filtration systems to be delivered free of cost to local communities. One benefit is it avoids extra-costs. Another advantage is the existing contact with local people.

This year two students from of our university, Milena and Nicole, will go to Indonesia while two others, Corinna and Mareike, will travel to Peru for a theory semester abroad. In Peru and Indonesia there are communities which either have to buy expensive drinking water or, if they don´t have money at all, are forced to drink contaminated water that may lead to heavy illness in adults and can even be life threatening for children due to water-borne diseases. Furthermore, with our project, we aim to teach the sustainable use of these 10 filtration systems. We plan on staying in touch with the communities during our theory semester and also send other students from following semesters to the same communities to check on how the communities get along with the filter systems and to keep the project sustainable.

Why do we need your support?

Since we already have to cover our own travel expenses, we need to fundraise the costs of the filtration systems which are cost-efficient but still not affordable by ourselves.

Thank you very much for your support.
